UK Online
UK online centres offer free or low cost access to
technology and support people to use it effectively.
Upperby CDC is one of 6000 centres across England, opening up computer
skills, the internet and online government services to millions
of people.
By connecting people to technology, UK online centres
aim to connect people to new skills, new opportunities, and new
choices in their everyday lives.
Currently our product suite includes first time on
line, myguide and a taste of English
What can e-Government do for me?
e-Government is changing the way people use public
services, by making them available over the internet.
Central government and local authorities are now providing
many of their services online, meaning it’s much easier for
you to access the information you need, 24 hours a day.
Upperby CDC can help you explore the wide range of
services available:
• searching for a job and careers advice
• claiming benefits online
• guidance on pensions and retirement
• information and advice on health issues
• information for parents – eg childcare, schools.
First Time On Line
This gives you a guided tour of all the basics, from
using a keyboard and a mouse, to sending an email and searching
the internet. Learn some new skills and get a taste of some of the
online courses you might want to do in the future
E – Skills Passport
Having basic ICT skills is as important today as being
literate and numerate. The government’s Skills Strategy says
everyone should have ICT skills as well as good levels of literacy
and numeracy.
Because UK online centres have been very successful
in reaching and engaging people with ICT in a very short space of
time; half a million people visited UK online centres in 2003. Centres
are being asked to develop this work further. By using the e-skills
passport UK online centres can offer their new and existing users
a product to assess their ICT skills and a means to record their
progress as they develop them.
Ufi has worked with e-skills to develop an e-skills
passport specifically for UK online centres users. The aim
is to develop their ICT skills and bring people back into learning.
In addition, identify any other basic skills needs and support people
to move into further learning.
The e- skills passport has been developed using the
common set of ICT skills and standards identified by the DfES and
other national organisations. These standards have been the basis
of the ICT techniques and levels for this version of the e-skills
passport.
How much does it cost and how long do I keep it?
The first time online passport is available without
charge to UK online centres to use with their learners. Ufi has
paid for a licence to develop and make available this version of
the e-skills passport to the UK online network.
The passport is valid for one year from the date a
learner registers for their passport. During that time learners
may use the passport to record their skills as they improve as many
times as they like.
Initial Skills Assessments
This section helps you understand your skills level
with Maths and English and takes about an hour to complete on line.
A member of our staff will then be able to offer advice and guidance
to the next level of qualifications you could take.
Myguide
Myguide is a website which provides a simple, intuitive
gateway to the internet, offering a free, easy-to-use email account
and search facility. Users can personalise and keep their settings
- changing colours and font size, and choose to use the 'hear it'
function which reads the text out on the screen.
Myguide is aimed at absolute beginners, and is designed
to be supported by staff from our centre, providing assistance and
reassurance to make sure people's first steps onto the internet
are a positive experience.
